Rhye first broke onto the scene in 2012 with the breakthrough album, Woman, and now Michael Milosh is back with another masterful record, Blood. Simply put, Milosh creates music that leaves you with chills. The live band is 10 or 11 pieces large and it’s more like an orchestra with the cello, violin, bass, keyboards and more. What makes Rhye so special is how Milosh is able to create so much intimacy with his voice. What Milosh understands more than anything in an era of heavy compression is how to use the fullest dynamic range. Although Rhye released a new album in February, I’m going back to 2012; here’s my favourite song by Rhye, “The Fall.”

Hollerado
Hollerado have been one of Canada’s indie mainstays for over 11 years now! Their music is fun and full of energy, which makes sense when you see them on stage. Their presence makes you want to sing and dance, which makes it hard not to enjoy them (plus it helps that they’re four of the nicest and most genuine dudes out there). Hollerado are a friend of Hillside and are ready to return for the third time! To get you excited for tonight’s show, here’s a throwback to one of the best songs of their first album: “Got To Lose”; because really – what have you got to lose?

U.S. Girls
In A Poem Unlimited is currently the top charted album on the CJRU charts, and that’s one of the reasons why I’m excited to see U.S. Girls. U.S. Girls is the experimental pop project ironically done by one woman, Meghan Remy. The music sounds as if Remy tripped on acid and travelled through a musical time warp. The fuzzy electric guitar sounds like it came straight from the 70’s and when its paired with the wild saxophone, it sounds very psychedelic. If you want a taste of U.S. Girls, then listen to “Mad As Hell”; it sounds like Gwen Stefani singing Blondie’s “Heart of Glass”. Now that’s a sales pitch!

A Tribe Called Red
A Tribe Called Red is bringing new life to the electronic music scene with their unique sound. The duo are both Indigenous Peoples and they make sure to bring their influences into their music. Their name is an homage to A Tribe Called Quest, a 90’s hip-hop group that tackled African-American social issues and ATCR are doing the same for the Indigenous community. They’re doing so by bringing traditional powwow music to a modern audience. They describe their music as “powwow step,” a fresh take on powwow music that translates it to the urban, dance audience. The band’s biggest success was in 2017 when they won the JUNO Award for Group of the Year. This will be a can’t miss performance!
