In these stressful and uncertain times, it’s important to remember just how important music is for maintaining our mental faculties. With that in mind, here are 5 albums coming out soon that we’ve compiled for you to get excited about whilst self-isolating. Stay safe!

Ellis – Born Again (Royal Mountain/Fat Possum)

Release date: April 3

With her debut full-length record, Hamilton-based musician Ellis (a.k.a Linnea Williams née Siggelkow) has leaned into the gentler side of her particular brand of shimmering dream pop. With the singles “Embarrassing” and “March 13”, Williams demonstrates an ability to write grandiose art pop that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Lana Del Rey record while still maintaining her own voice and sound.

Backxwash – God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It (self-released)

Release date: August 2020

Born in Zambia, Montreal-based rapper and producer Backxwash’s 2019 album Deviancy was an intense and raw exercise in noisey horrorcore. From melding hardcore punk and industrial rap on “Devil in a Moshpit” to the eerie “Don’t Come to the Woods”, the album seemed like the natural next step in a sound popularized by Death Grips and Danny Brown’s album Atrocity Exhibiton among others. While Backxwash hasn’t set a specific release date as of yet, she has completed recording of the album and released the single, “Black Magic”.

Ringo Deathstarr – Ringo Deathstarr

Release date: March 27

Over the course of 13 years and four albums, Ringo Deathstarr have emerged as one of the most consistent modern shoegaze bands. From their Jesus and Mary Chain-worshiping beginnings to the gorgeously blissed out pop of recent singles “Gazin’” and “God Help the Ones You Love”, they have maintained a distinct sound in an oversaturated scene. Any fans of noisy feedback-laden guitar rock are sure to enjoy their upcoming self-titled album, arriving March 27.

Yves Tumor – Heaven to a Tortured Mind (Warp)

Release date: April 3

Few musicians working today have managed to combine disparate sounds into a cohesive whole quite as well as the mysterious Yves Tumor. Tumor’s output has collaged together elements of art pop, psychedelia and industrial music into a singular vision of modern pop music, with a distinctly queer bent. Co-produced by Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira), Heaven to a Tortured Mind arrives April 3 via Warp Records.

TOPS – I Feel Alive (Arbutus)

Release date: April 3

Montreal-based indie rock band TOPS follow-up 2017’s Sugar at the Gate with their latest record I Feel Alive, out vita Arbutus Records on April 3. Album single “I Feel Alive” finds the band embracing an almost ABBA-esque sound layered within TOPS’ signature jangly guitar leads and the vocals of singer Jane Penny.
