The 2020s are going to be to Millenials what the 1970s were to Boomers: the ‘greatest decade of music’. Doubt me all you want but the 2020s mark a new era for music. Streaming has revolutionized how musicians acquire inspiration by giving everyone access to any song of any genre from any generation. Musicians are now influenced by this eclectic database of sounds, which reincarnates into new, non-categorical music: true fusion. If you can’t tell already, I love hearing genres fused together, which is why Yuka’s “Ruins” is my Track of the Week.

“Ruins” has a little bit of everything: powerhouse vocals, a tasteful horn section and a backbeat that you can’t not dance to. I’m serious. I don’t think you could listen to this song without dancing at least a little! The guitar and drums combine to form a rhythm section worthy of the repeat button.

Yuka have a familiar sound, the Toronto-based seven-piece playing a blend of soul, funk and R&B that harkens back to the days of Stax and Motown Records. It’s cool, it’s smooth, it’s sexy, and most importantly it’s different. So if you want to treat your ears to something different, something that’ll get you moving, then this is the song for you.
