Miss Thing’s – June 14th, 2019
The New Currency collective has been a driving force in Toronto’s underground music & creative scene, that has pushed the boundaries of what is accessible to local music fans. They have operated under the vision of “Pushing creative culture through the exchange of ideas. Podcast. Radio & Events” and have thus far been responsible for some of the most sonically diverse parties in the city.
As such, there was no doubt in my mind when I saw the announcement of a New Currency x NXNE Clubland show that it would be something special. The lineup of Abscvnd, Dre Ngozi, Myst Milano & Nico Adomako set itself apart as one of the most robust DJ lineups of any Clubland shows this year. New Currency was once again poised to throw a party that melted together a rich global palette of sounds into one sweaty party.
Arriving at the venue early on a Friday night, I was pleasantly surprised by the unique venue. Miss Thing’s is a bubbling restaurant in West Queen West with a Hawaiian aesthetic and a large dance floor. Toronto local, Abscvnd was quick to get the party started with his selections of future beats, trap and R&B laced with tropical sensibilities. Notable tracks played include a baile funk remix of Khalid’s ‘Location’ and a sneaky drop of Laurence Guy’s ‘When I saw you for the first time’ which tied together a fantastic opening set.
Up next was another Toronto staple, Dre Ngozi he was quick to set pace and turn the heat up with her selections of caribbean and latin sounds. Her quick and sharp mixing between riddims and songs set the party on fire with the dance floor attracting people from all corners. From summer hits like Koffee’s ‘Toast’ and Stormzy’s ‘Vossi Bop’ to old bashment classics like Red Rat’s ‘Tight Up Skirt’, Dre Ngozi kept people dancing well into the night.
I walked away feeling grateful to have been part of the night and thoroughly satisfied with the music + talent showcased that night. I would highly recommend following the what’s next for New Currency along with any events featuring Abscvnd and Dre Ngozi as it is guaranteed to be a party!
Up next was Nico Adomako, a german selector via New York making his Toronto debut. His addition was the topping on a fantastic night as he brought his own flavour of club music interspersed with Caribbean sounds. Melting together everything from UK House to Dancehall and Jersey Club music, Nico Adomako’s set pushed the party into new and exciting sonic directions. Playing well into the early hours of the morning, Nico Adomako elevated an already stellar club night into one for the books for both New Currency and NXNE.
