Review: Cœur de pirate Live @ Massey Hall, May 31

As a celebration of its 120th anniversary, Massey Hall is commissioning a special project to commemorate its accomplishments as one of Canada’s most accomplished music venues.

As a celebration of its 120th anniversary, Massey Hall is commissioning a special project to commemorate its accomplishments as one of Canada’s most accomplished music venues.

Live at Massey Hall features four sets of concerts by famous Canadian artists. Each show will be recorded, edited and shared online as 30-minute episodes. The awesome catch is that all the seats in the venue cost the same- just $18.94- to honor its founding year. Yes, $18.94, no matter if its front row or balcony seats!

On May 31st, 2014, Montreal pop singer Cœur de pirate took the main stage, with former Constantines front man Bry Webb as her supporting act.

This year, Cœur de Pirate released an English-language cover album entitled “Trauma”, where she covered songs by the famous Bon Iver, The Rolling Stones, Bill Withers and more.

However, during the concert, she mainly performed songs off her self-titled debut and sophomore album, “Cœur de pirate” and “Blonde”. Her voice was hauntingly beautiful, and she sounded exactly like her recordings. She also previewed some new French and English songs and hinted that they will be on her new record, although there has been no word on a set release date yet.

In the end, the crowd gave Cœur de pirate a standing ovation and she wiped away a few tears. “Five years ago, I was playing at the Dakota Tavern,” she said “and now, I’m in Massey Hall.”
