Downtown Campus Radio Raising Funds For Community Storytelling Project

CJRU 1280 AM is a non-profit, volunteer-made radio station with a special mission this Fall.

Since going on air in March 2016, CJRU has prioritized documenting the one-of-a-kind stories lived by everyday people working, creating and living within Toronto’s diverse communities. Through interviews, written articles, news reports, on-the-scene live broadcasts and more, CJRU has amplified some of the most insightful stories reflecting the journeys of local artists, entrepreneurs, community leaders, non-profit organizations and students – not to mention the station’s show hosts! CJRU has been able to share the stories that often go untold in mainstream media, and has continued to create new employment and volunteer opportunities, as well as add new content to its programming that encourages and supports individuals in telling their own stories.

From November 14th to November 20th, CJRU is raising funds to develop and implement the Your Story Here mentorship program that will launch in the Spring of 2022. The program is an effort to further expand on the station’s storytelling culture by providing an opportunity for selected individuals who are doing impactful work within their communities, to be immersed in the world of community radio. Working alongside CJRU and guest facilitators to create an audio/visual documentary that tells their story, participants will learn the ins and outs of script writing, vocal recording, audio editing, broadcasting and more – while creating their own piece of audio/visual content that shares their personal stories and the work they do with a broader audience.

  • $60 will cover food and transportation costs for one participant for the series
  • $200 will cover honorarium costs for one participant
  • $2,400 will cover the costs of 5 participants partaking in the full workshop series

“Supporting people in telling stories and sharing their ideas and art is a core part of campus and community radio,” said Station Manger Elissa Matthews. “We’re so excited to launch the Your Story Here mentorship program this spring to continue to support this type of work at CJRU.”
